01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Ministeriale by Boneschi, chassis number 913.384, was a one-off formal limousine constructed circa 1948–1950 on Alfa Romeo’s long-wheelbase 6C 2500 Turismo platform. The bodywork was executed by Carrozzeria Boneschi of Milan, a coachbuilder noted for its conservative, high-formality designs intended for official and diplomatic use. This example represents one of the rare instances in which Alfa Romeo’s 6C 2500 was adapted into a state limousine by an external carrozzeria following the cessation of wartime production and the limited resumption of bespoke builds. The chassis employed was the Turismo variant of the 6C 2500, featuring a steel ladder-type frame extended to a 3,250 mm wheelbase. The engine was Alfa Romeo’s 2,443 cc inline six-cylinder unit, fitted with dual overhead camshafts and typically configured with a single Weber or Solex carburetor. Output for this configuration ranged from 87 to 90 horsepower, transmitted to the rear axle via a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the upper gears. The car featured independent front suspension with coil springs, a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and hydraulic drum brakes at all four corners. The coachwork presented a six- or seven-passenger closed body with a high roofline, wide rear doors, and a partitioned rear compartment. The frontal treatment incorporated Alfa Romeo’s characteristic trilobe grille within a streamlined front fascia. The design avoided excessive ornamentation, favoring smooth panel surfaces and flush glazing. The build emphasized dignified proportions, formal posture, and discrete presence, aligning with its intended representational function. Chassis 913.384 is the only documented Ministeriale-bodied 6C 2500 by Boneschi. While Alfa Romeo records indicate a total of 81 Ministeriale units were completed across various chassis configurations, examples bodied by Boneschi are exceedingly rare, and this appears to be the sole surviving unit with confirmed attribution. Period photographic evidence places the vehicle in state or ceremonial service, though no continuous ownership history has been published.
