01 / THE STORY
History & context
Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini was a 1929 Berlina built by Garavini on an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 chassis. Its lightweight steel body used streamlined proportions and aerodynamic principles within the late-1920s coachbuilding idiom. Traditional construction methods shaped the body, with craftsmanship and close attention to detail forming part of its execution. The Berlina combined Alfa Romeo mechanical components with a separate coachbuilt body by Garavini.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini belonged to a period in which Alfa Romeo supplied chassis for work by prominent Italian coachbuilders. Its body presented a compact, enclosed form rather than an open touring body, and its proportions followed the contemporary movement toward smoother, more streamlined automobile design. Steel construction kept the body lightweight while the chassis provided a robust foundation for the coachwork. Garavini applied traditional panel-making methods to the Berlina’s bodywork and exterior detailing.
An inline-six engine powered the car. The chassis was designed to combine performance and stability, and its configuration accommodated advanced suspension options intended to improve ride quality and handling. These mechanical features suited both urban use and longer journeys. The car brought the six-cylinder Alfa Romeo chassis together with a practical enclosed body format, placing the emphasis on the relationship between chassis engineering and specialist Italian coachwork.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Berlina Garavini was produced in limited numbers. It appeared at automotive shows, where Garavini’s body construction and Alfa Romeo engineering were presented together. Surviving examples are held in private collections and institutional archives, where they provide material for research into Italian coachbuilding of the period. The 1929 Berlina remains a documented example of Garavini’s work on the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 platform.
Garavini’s treatment of the Berlina joined a steel body, traditional construction and streamlined late-1920s styling on an Alfa Romeo chassis. The inline-six mechanical basis and suspension-capable chassis configuration defined the car’s technical character, while limited production and surviving examples preserve the model within collections and archives.
