01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 2000 Sprint designed by Carrozzeria Boneschi and presented at the 1960 Turin Auto Salon represents a distinct iteration within the broader experimentation with Italian coachbuilt design during the postwar period. Based on the standard Alfa Romeo 2000 chassis (Tipo 102), the car was styled under the direction of Rodolfo Bonetto, a prominent figure in industrial design, who applied his concept of “linea tesa” (or “tense line”) to its form. The resulting bodywork diverged significantly from the factory Touring-designed coupe, emphasizing linearity, taut surfaces, and a minimalist approach to ornamentation. This coupe was characterized by an angular silhouette, sharp-edged fenders, a flat roofline, and restrained chrome detailing. The front fascia adopted a four-headlamp configuration integrated into a rectangular grille, while the rear end featured squared-off lines and horizontal tail lamps. The visual vocabulary employed here aligned with the principles of rationalist industrial design, reflecting a period of growing convergence between automotive styling and broader currents in modern design theory. Although mechanically unaltered from the standard 2000 Sprint, which used a 1975cc inline-four producing around 105 horsepower, the Boneschi variant served as a stylistic exercise rather than a performance-focused model. The prototype was not intended for series production and remained a one-off. It is also notable for the absence of excessive ornamentation or dynamic curves, characteristics which were still prevalent in many contemporary Italian coachbuilt specials. Presented alongside works from Vignale, Pininfarina, and Viotti at the 1960 Turin show, the Boneschi 2000 Sprint was part of the firm’s broader effort to reassert itself in a market increasingly dominated by standardized mass production. The car’s design was polarizing at the time but is now recognized as an early and clear application of the geometric and functionalist tendencies that would later become prominent in 1970s automotive design.
