01 / THE STORY
History & context
Alfa Romeo 20-30 HP ES Sport was coachbuilt by Schieppati in 1921. It used the Alfa Romeo 20-30 HP chassis and a six-litre engine, placing the car among the sporting and luxury applications available on that mechanical basis. The model was developed while Alfa Romeo was expanding its presence in the competitive motor market of the early 1920s. Its chassis accepted different body styles, allowing customers to specify bodies suited to their preferred use.
Schieppati gave the car a coachbuilt body in keeping with the construction practices of the period. The work combined functional requirements with considered proportions and styling. Its construction used methods intended to provide strength while employing lightweight materials. Those methods reflected the changing standards then shaping Italian coachbuilding, where the body maker worked around a separate chassis and drivetrain.
The 20-30 HP’s robust chassis provided the foundation for the ES Sport body. Its drivetrain formed part of a configuration intended to deliver performance and reliability, while the six-litre engine represented the engineering advances applied to the model. The same mechanical basis could serve both sporting and luxury-oriented coachwork, making body design and customer specification central elements of the finished car.
Production of the Alfa Romeo 20-30 HP was limited, and its chassis numbering reflected that restricted output. Examples were shown at motor shows during the period, where the model appeared within the contemporary automotive market. Surviving cars are held in private collections and institutional archives, where they provide material for the study of postwar coachbuilding. The Schieppati-bodied ES Sport remains documented as a 1921 expression of the 20-30 HP chassis.
Schieppati built the body around the 20-30 HP’s established mechanical layout rather than producing a separate Alfa Romeo model. The car’s period character rests on that division of work: Alfa Romeo supplied the chassis and drivetrain, while Schieppati executed the coachwork. The ES Sport designation distinguishes this vehicle within the 20-30 HP range and preserves its connection with the Turin coachbuilder.
