01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 1900 Giardinetta Riva was a one-off estate-bodied car built in 1957 by Carrozzeria Riva on the Alfa Romeo 1900 platform. The documented chassis number is 10586, and the car is considered the only example produced in this configuration. The Alfa Romeo 1900 was introduced in the postwar period as the marque’s first modern series-production model. It used a unitary body structure and a twin-cam four-cylinder engine, combining everyday usability with the sporting character expected from Alfa Romeo. The 1900 also became a popular base for Italian coachbuilders, who produced coupés, cabriolets, special saloons and one-off bodies on its mechanical platform. Riva’s Giardinetta was an unusual interpretation of the 1900. Instead of a sporting coupé or formal saloon, the coachbuilder created a practical estate body, combining passenger-car proportions with increased rear load space. The design retained the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout of the 1900 and adapted the bodywork for greater utility. The side profile was defined by the extended roofline, enlarged rear compartment and long rear side windows. The rear section was more vertical than on a standard saloon, improving luggage capacity and making the car suitable for travel or mixed passenger-cargo use. The bodywork remained refined, with restrained detailing and proportions closer to an elegant shooting brake than to a commercial vehicle. Mechanically, the car was based on the Alfa Romeo 1900, with its twin-cam inline-four engine and chassis layout. Exact engine specification for this individual example is not clearly documented, but the model followed the general technical architecture of the 1900 series. The surviving car is part of the Lopresto Collection, which includes several important Italian prototypes, one-offs and coachbuilt cars. The Alfa Romeo 1900 Giardinetta Riva is significant as a rare postwar Italian estate-bodied special and as an unusual example of practical coachbuilding on an Alfa Romeo sporting platform.
