01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Ferrari 550 Maranello is a highly regarded front-engine V12 2-seat grand tourer, produced by Ferrari from 1996 to 2001. This iconic model marked Ferrari’s return to a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration for its 12-cylinder cars, 23 years after the 365 GTB/4 Daytona was replaced by the mid-engined Berlinetta Boxer. The 550 Maranello represented a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s history, moving away from the mid-engine layouts that dominated their lineup since the Daytona era. Under the guidance of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was designed as a modern revival of the classic front-engined V12 grand tourer. Unveiled in July 1996 at the Nürburgring, the 550 Maranello captured the essence of Ferrari’s rich heritage. The “550” refers to its 5.5-litre engine displacement, and “Maranello” honors Ferrari’s hometown, further cementing its connection to Ferrari’s legacy. The Ferrari 550 Maranello’s design was crafted by Pininfarina, one of the most respected names in automotive design. Under the supervision of Lorenzo Ramaciotti, designers Elvio D’Aprile, Goran Popović, and Maurizio Corbi contributed to the car’s elegant yet aggressive aesthetics. The result was a design that perfectly embodied Ferrari’s tradition of blending beauty with performance. Sharing its frame and key engine components with the Ferrari 456, the 550 Maranello featured a shorter wheelbase, enhancing its agility and driving dynamics. This made the 550 Maranello not just a grand tourer but also a high-performance vehicle capable of delivering thrilling experiences on both road and track. Throughout its production, Ferrari produced 3,083 units of the 550 Maranello. In 2002, the model was succeeded by the Ferrari 575M, an evolution that featured a larger 5.75-litre engine and further enhancements in performance. The Ferrari 550 Maranello remains a highly sought-after model among enthusiasts and collectors, celebrated for its timeless design, powerful performance, and deep connection to Ferrari’s illustrious racing heritage. For those searching for a classic Ferrari grand tourer, the 550 Maranello stands out as a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, representing Ferrari’s return to its roots with modern engineering excellence.
