01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Cabriolet by Pininfarina, built on chassis 915.511, is a one-off coachbuilt example produced in 1947. It was commissioned by Commendatore Arturo Fumagalli di Tirano and constructed on one of the 28 Super Sport chassis manufactured by Alfa Romeo during the wartime period. The body was designed under Fedele Bianco at Pininfarina. The car features straight, uninterrupted body sides and a cross-section inspired by an aircraft wing profile. The front incorporates an oval Alfa Romeo grille with vertical slats and recessed headlamps set into rounded fenders. A simple, narrow bumper extends across the lower fascia. The rear bodywork followed the same approach, employing smooth, continuous surfaces with minimal decorative elements. The exterior finish combined metallic silver paint with a light blue folding canvas top. Wheel equipment consisted of steel disc wheels with chromed hubcaps and narrow post-war tires. Trim elements were restrained, in line with the material limitations of the late 1940s and Pininfarina’s preference at the time for clean, unbroken surfaces. A specific technical characteristic of chassis 915.511 is the dual-hinged hood cover, designed to open from either side. This system allowed improved access to the engine bay, which housed the standard 2,443-cc inline-six of the 6C 2500 SS series with triple carburetion, a four-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, and a rear swing-axle layout. Chassis 915.511 illustrates Pininfarina’s early post-war body construction techniques, applied to Alfa Romeo’s top-tier sporting chassis and defined by aerodynamic surfacing, reduced ornamentation, and functional mechanical access solutions.
