01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Ardea Cabriolet by Pininfarina was a limited-production open-bodied automobile constructed on the Lancia Ardea platform during the early 1940s. The Ardea, introduced by Lancia in 1939 as a compact saloon, was notable for its engineering refinement and compact V4 engine configuration. While the majority of production consisted of factory-built sedans, a small number of bare chassis were delivered to independent carrozzerie for bespoke bodywork. Among these, Carrozzeria Pininfarina produced a cabriolet variant, constructed in extremely limited numbers, likely no more than two or three examples. The underlying chassis was the Lancia Ardea Tipo 350, configured for coachbuilding. The powerplant consisted of a 902 cc narrow-angle V4 engine, water-cooled, with overhead valves. Power output in early series vehicles was approximately 28.8 horsepower, delivered through a four-speed manual gearbox. Later Ardea models adopted a five-speed transmission, but it is unclear whether the cabriolet examples incorporated this feature. The chassis featured independent front suspension with coil springs and a live rear axle, with drum brakes fitted at all four wheels. The Pininfarina cabriolet body conformed to stylistic norms of the late 1930s and early 1940s, with upright proportions, free-standing fenders, a vertical grille, and a flat windscreen. The structure was likely constructed in steel over a wooden subframe, consistent with the firm’s pre-war practice. The vehicle seated four occupants and was equipped with a folding fabric roof. No significant mechanical alterations were made to the chassis or drivetrain beyond those offered by Lancia as standard. Production records for the Pininfarina Ardea Cabriolet are incomplete. Period sources and coachbuilder registers confirm the existence of a small number of examples built to client order. No surviving chassis numbers have been published, and no documented examples are held in public museums or institutional collections. At least one example is illustrated in period Pininfarina promotional literature. The Lancia Ardea Cabriolet by Pininfarina represents a minor yet notable instance of collaboration between Lancia and an emerging coachbuilder. It reflects both the constrained conditions of the early wartime automotive industry and the continuation of artisanal bodywork on mass-produced mechanical platforms. Its rarity and undocumented fate underscore the transitional character of Italian coachbuilding during the early 1940s.
