01 / THE STORY

History & context

Fiat 850 Coupé Sportivo Vignale was a 1965 coupé built by Vignale on Fiat 850 mechanical components. It combined the Fiat 850’s compact mechanical basis with a separate sporting body, retaining a rear-mounted inline-four engine and the Fiat 850 platform. The car was one of Vignale’s Fiat 850-based proposals of the mid-1960s, with a low roofline, a sharply sloping rear treatment and a distinct front fascia.

Vignale formed the body with clean, uninterrupted surface treatment and carefully reduced exterior fittings. Contemporary Style Auto singled out the small badges and door handles, whose broad-radius sections followed the surrounding body contours. The article also drew attention to the relationship between the front wings, the roof-panel shut lines and the profiles that defined the main surfaces. The roofline descended toward the rear, while the compact nose and short overhangs gave the car a concentrated proportion.

The Sportivo used the rear-engined Fiat 850 layout. Its inline-four sat behind the passenger compartment, and the chassis derived from the Fiat 850 platform. The suspension was arranged to retain the base car’s balance of ride comfort and sporting character. Vignale employed traditional coachbuilding methods for the bodywork, producing a lightweight structure with the individual styling details of this coupé.

Style Auto reported that the car was shown at the 1965 Geneva Salon, where its reception was restrained. In July 1965, it won first place at the Alassio concours d’elegance. The same article compared its abbreviated nose and truncated rear treatment with Vignale’s Fiat-Abarth 750 coupés of 1957 and with the 1962 1000 Record experimental car.

Documentation records a production total of one Fiat 850 Coupé Sportivo Vignale. This makes the car a single Vignale-bodied interpretation of Fiat 850 mechanical components rather than a regular production derivative.

The single-car production record places the Sportivo within the specialist coachbuilt work undertaken by Vignale during 1965. Its body combined the Fiat 850 mechanical layout with a distinct coupé form, while the Geneva presentation and the Alassio award fixed its public appearances within that year. No series production is recorded beyond the one documented example.

The Fiat 850 platform supplied the structural and mechanical foundation, while Vignale supplied the bodywork and exterior treatment. The car’s documented production figure remains one unit, and the 1965 dates cover both its Geneva Salon showing and its first-place result at Alassio in July 1965. The Fiat 850 Coupé Sportivo Vignale was produced as a single example.

Vignale’s treatment concentrated the visual identity in the body rather than a change of mechanical layout. The rear-mounted engine, inline-four configuration and Fiat 850 chassis remained central to the car, while the low roof, sloping rear and individual frontal treatment distinguished the Sportivo from the Fiat donor model. Production remained limited to one unit.
