01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa is not merely a car; it is a symbol of mechanical poetry, born at the golden intersection of art and engineering. Introduced in 1957, it was Maranello’s answer to the changing landscape of endurance racing—an era when performance was pursued with elegance, and victory was earned through innovation. Beneath the sculpted bonnet lies the heart of this machine: a 3.0-liter Colombo-designed V12 engine. With its red-painted cam covers—hence the name “Testa Rossa” or “Red Head”—this powerplant was as beautiful as it was formidable. Breathing through six twin-choke Weber carburetors, it delivered approximately 300 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, refined for endurance, not excess. The engine’s smooth power delivery and unshakable reliability made it a legend on circuits across the world. Chassis engineering was no less meticulous. A tubular steel spaceframe supported the bodywork, initially designed by Scaglietti with evocative pontoon fenders—form guided by function, as airflow was channeled to cool the drum brakes. Later variants evolved with cleaner, more aerodynamic lines, always retaining the car’s arresting presence. Its success on the track was nothing short of historic. Between 1958 and 1961, the 250 Testa Rossa claimed numerous victories, including three wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and multiple triumphs at Sebring and Buenos Aires. It helped Ferrari secure three World Sportscar Championship titles, cementing the marque’s dominance in endurance racing. Driving the 250 TR was to experience harmony between man and machine. Steering was precise, responses immediate, and balance sublime. The car spoke to its driver in every corner, every straight, every brake zone—a conversation few modern machines can replicate.

Each point is a completed sale with its own date, in chronological order. Dates are positioned by calendar time, with approximate placement when only a year or month is documented. The connecting line shows observed sales prices in this currency, not an appreciation index: transactions may concern different chassis and specifications. Factory prices and unsold estimates are excluded.
