01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Cabriolet Speciale Pinin Farina, chassis 915.224, was a one-off cabriolet built in 1946 on the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport platform. The body was produced by Pinin Farina and recorded in the Pininfarina archive under number PF 465. Deriving from the earlier Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Speciale (chassis 915.169) of 1946, this model carries subtle yet significant modifications, particularly in its front styling, which prominently features the iconic Alfa Romeo *scudetto* grille. The car was right-hand drive and was originally finished in blue with a yellow leather interior. The chassis was approved on 2 April 1946 and the completed car was delivered on 11 December 1946. Its first recorded owner was Ditta Mario Rovedati of Turin. The engine number was 926.026. The car was part of the early postwar production of the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500, a model that continued to serve as one of Italy’s most prestigious chassis for bespoke coachwork. In Sport specification, the 6C 2500 used Alfa Romeo’s inline-six engine and a shorter, more dynamic chassis than the Turismo versions, making it suitable for elegant cabriolets and sporting coupés. The Pinin Farina body was a Cabriolet Speciale, built as a unique design rather than a standard series body. The design is believed to have been connected to Pietro Frua, who worked at Pinin Farina before establishing his own coachbuilding business. The attribution remains probable rather than definitively documented. The car received contemporary press coverage in Motor Italia, issue III/1947, page 17. Its most important public appearance came at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Cernobbio on 27–28 September 1947, where it won First Prize ex aequo. The later history of chassis 915.224 is only partially documented. In June 2004, the car was offered for sale by Daniel J. Rapley of Bethel, Connecticut, USA.
