01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 TV Spider Pininfarina was a unique and elegant open-top prototype created in the mid-1950s. Developed by the esteemed Italian design house Pininfarina, this one-off model was based on the small series production Fiat 1100 TV offered by Pininfarina. The “TV” in the name stood for “Turismo Veloce,” highlighting its role as a fast touring car. The Spider version maintained the styling of the production 1100 TV, emphasizing continuity in design while offering the freedom of an open-top configuration. The front fascia showcased rounded headlights integrated into subtly flared fenders, complemented by the iconic oval grille with the Fiat emblem, giving it a refined yet distinctive look. Chrome accents along the side profile added a touch of sophistication, while the overall shape remained compact and balanced, consistent with the original 1100 TV’s proportions. Pininfarina’s design philosophy was evident in the Spider’s flowing lines and well-integrated elements, blending sportiness with a classic roadster feel. The car’s low-slung stance and smooth, aerodynamic contours reflected the Italian passion for style and driving pleasure. The convertible roof, designed to fold neatly, preserved the car’s elegant silhouette when retracted. Under the hood, the 1100 TV Spider retained the same spirited engine as the production model, offering a balanced mix of agility and performance. The original 1100 TV was known for its lively character, and the Spider version aimed to enhance the driving experience with open-air motoring. Inside, the cabin likely featured the same interior of the Coupé. The layout would have prioritized functionality without sacrificing the touch of luxury typical of Pininfarina’s creations. Although it never entered series production, the Fiat 1100 TV Spider Pininfarina remains an iconic piece of automotive history. It serves as a prime example of Pininfarina’s ability to transform a production model into a refined, bespoke prototype, showcasing the harmonious blend of performance, style, and Italian craftsmanship.
