01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo Super Flow IV stands as the pinnacle of a series of innovative concept cars designed by Pininfarina and presented at major automotive events. Unveiled at the 1960 Geneva Motor Show, the Super Flow IV was the fourth and final iteration in the Super Flow series, incorporating the best elements from its predecessors while pushing the boundaries of automotive design. One of the most striking features of the Super Flow IV is its use of Plexiglass, which was employed in a novel way. This iteration extended the use of Plexiglass beyond the headlight covers to include the car’s domed roof. The integration of Plexiglass not only enhanced the car’s futuristic appearance but also contributed to its aerodynamic profile, showcasing Pininfarina’s commitment to both style and function. The Super Flow IV was designed with versatility in mind. It could be transformed from a coupe to a spyder, thanks to its unique panel system. Unlike conventional designs where panels are hinged, the Super Flow IV featured panels that could slide down and back underneath the rear window. This innovative approach allowed for a seamless transition between different body styles, reflecting Pininfarina’s forward-thinking design philosophy. The car’s design narrative is a testament to the evolving trends of the 1950s and 1960s. Each version of the Super Flow series demonstrated Pininfarina’s ability to capture the spirit of the era while pushing the envelope in terms of aesthetics and technology. The Super Flow IV, in particular, was crafted to make a significant impact at every event and location it visited, embodying the excitement and innovation of its time.
