01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Lancia Aurelia B20 GT,  built by Pininfarina, represents a significant development in post-war Italian automotive engineering. Produced from 1951 through 1958, the B20 GT was a two-door coupé variant of the Aurelia series, distinguished by its aerodynamic styling and mechanical innovations. The collaboration between Lancia and Pininfarina marked an important moment in automotive history, with the B20 GT serving as a key model in establishing the reputation of both manufacturers. The B20 GT was built on the Aurelia chassis, featuring a pioneering V6 engine designed by Vittorio Jano. Initial models were equipped with a 2.0-liter V6 producing 75 horsepower. Throughout its production, the B20 GT underwent six series updates, each refining both design and performance aspects. The second series, introduced in 1952, increased engine output to 80 horsepower and included visual modifications such as smooth steel bumpers and rear fins. The fourth series, launched in 1954, further increased engine capacity to 2.5 liters, delivering 118 horsepower, and incorporated a De Dion rear axle to improve handling. Pininfarina’s design work emphasized streamlined bodywork with clean lines and balanced proportions, resulting in a coupé that was both aesthetically restrained and functionally advanced. The use of steel body panels, chrome detailing, and subtle stylistic elements such as a chrome strip beneath the doors characterized the exterior. Interior updates across series included revised instrumentation and improved ergonomics. Production numbers of the Pininfarina-bodied B20 GT are limited compared to other variants. Early models were occasionally bodied by other coachbuilders such as Viotti or Ghia, but Pininfarina was responsible for the majority of B20 GT coupés from Series II onward. Specific chassis numbers associated with Pininfarina-bodied cars have been documented in various registries; for example, chassis numbers in the range of B20-1050 to B20-1600 are frequently attributed to Pininfarina builds. Ownership records of individual chassis have been maintained in classic car registries and auction archives, noting provenance and original delivery details. These records are important for verifying authenticity and condition for collectors. The Lancia Aurelia B20 GT by Pininfarina remains a subject of study for its contribution to automotive design and engineering in the mid-twentieth century.
