01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 TV Coupé built by Carrozzeria Monterosa in 1954 was one of several experimental interpretations of the Turismo Veloce chassis that appeared in the early postwar period. Monterosa, a Turin-based coachbuilder, produced the car in very limited numbers, and it reflected both contemporary Italian practices and clear influences from American styling trends of the mid-1950s. The bodywork was characterized by a tall, upright grille that incorporated the headlamps into its outline rather than separating them into discrete units, a detail that gave the front end an unusual and assertive appearance. The bonnet carried a central scoop, emphasizing the sporting orientation of the Turismo Veloce variant, while additional auxiliary lights were mounted low in the grille opening. The sides were comparatively plain, with smooth panels and minimal ornamentation, though the squared-off roof and upright pillars lent the car a somewhat formal profile, contrasting with the more flowing fastback coupés being built by other coachbuilders on the same chassis. At the rear, the design continued the rectilinear theme, with simplified surfaces and modest overhangs. The proportions remained compact, in keeping with the 1100 TV’s short wheelbase and four-cylinder engine, but the detailing gave the Monterosa coupé a heavier, more robust appearance than many of its counterparts. Mechanically, the car followed the standard 1100 Turismo Veloce configuration. The four-cylinder engine of 1,089 cc delivered around 50 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and a rear-wheel-drive layout. The chassis was unmodified from Fiat’s production specification, leaving Monterosa’s work entirely in the realm of exterior design and presentation. The Monterosa-built coupé did not progress beyond a handful of examples, and it is not recorded as part of any larger production effort. Today it is remembered as one of the more unusual and distinctive interpretations of the 1100 TV platform, demonstrating how even smaller Italian coachbuilders contributed individual solutions to Fiat’s popular compact sporting model.
