01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Prince Skyline Sport, designed by the renowned Italian car designer Giovanni Michelotti, was a significant milestone in automotive history. It made its debut at the 1960 Torino Auto Show, where it was hailed as the first domestic luxury sports coupe produced in Italy. The vehicle was celebrated not only for its striking design but also for being the first car to showcase Italian domestic craftsmanship in this segment, blending performance with luxury. Under the hood, the Prince Skyline Sport was equipped with a 1.9-liter 4-cylinder inline engine, delivering an optimal balance of power and efficiency. This engine was mated to a chassis borrowed from the Prince Gloria, a model that provided the mechanical foundation for the Skyline Sport. The design incorporated both elegance and sportiness, making it a standout on the automotive scene at the time. The Prince Skyline Sport went through two distinct phases during its production. The first series of prototypes was crafted by Carrozzeria Allemano, a well-regarded Italian coachbuilder known for its high-quality craftsmanship. These early prototypes set the stage for the production model, giving enthusiasts and car critics a glimpse of the future of luxury sports cars. However, as the model evolved, the second series saw its bodywork reworked by Carrozzeria Michelotti, Giovanni Michelotti’s own design studio. This transformation brought a more refined, streamlined look to the Skyline Sport, emphasizing the beauty of Italian design. This second series, built under Michelotti’s direct supervision, would ultimately define the Prince Skyline Sport’s lasting legacy in the automotive world. The vehicle embodied the Italian flair for automotive design, merging speed, elegance, and cutting-edge technology. Its launch not only marked the beginning of a new era for the Prince brand but also highlighted Giovanni Michelotti’s exceptional talent and influence in the realm of car design. Today, the Prince Skyline Sport is considered a classic symbol of Italian automotive ingenuity.
