01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat Punto Cabrio Wagon “Bricò” by Carrozzeria Marazzi was a unique prototype developed in 1994 on the basis of the first-generation Fiat Punto, internal type code 176. Conceived during a period when several Italian carrozzerie were invited to reinterpret existing production platforms, the Bricò represented an experimental approach to multifunctional body design, combining features of a convertible, station wagon, and utility vehicle in a single chassis. The base vehicle employed was a standard Fiat Punto, likely in 1.2 or 1.6 litre petrol configuration. These engines were part of the FIRE and Torque families, respectively, featuring four in-line cylinders with overhead camshafts. Output varied from approximately 60 to 90 horsepower depending on the specific version. Power was delivered to the front wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox. Suspension utilised independent McPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent torsion beam axle at the rear. Braking was achieved via front disc and rear drum assemblies, consistent with the series production Punto models. The bodywork, executed by Marazzi, integrated structural modifications to accommodate a convertible roof system while preserving the utility of a station wagon layout. The rear featured a wide-opening tailgate and reconfigurable load area, effectively merging leisure and light commercial functionality. The vehicle was bodied in steel, retaining essential dimensional characteristics of the donor car while extending the roofline and reinforcing the sills and subframe to maintain rigidity in open-top form. Interior modifications included folding rear seats and removable roof elements. External ornamentation was restrained, in line with Marazzi’s utilitarian aesthetic for the concept. Only one example of the Punto Cabrio Wagon Bricò was constructed. It was not intended for series production and remained a demonstration of coachbuilding flexibility. Chassis and engine identification specific to this prototype have not been published. The car was presented at design exhibitions but did not proceed beyond the prototype stage.
