01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Chery TX was a concept sport utility vehicle presented in 2012 by Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., developed in collaboration with the Italian design consultancy Granstudio. The model marked a strategic design milestone for the Chinese manufacturer, serving as its first formally recognized concept vehicle and reflecting an intent to reorient its brand image through the adoption of international design practices. It was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show and positioned as an emblem of Chery’s evolving design ambitions. The styling of the TX was directed by Lowie Vermeersch, founder of Granstudio, whose previous work in European automotive design informed the project’s conceptual direction. The exterior form was characterized by a fluid, aerodynamic silhouette, intended to convey movement and cohesion. The body surfaces featured deliberate curvature and minimal ornamentation, producing an aesthetic that emphasized continuity and proportion. The front fascia was defined by a narrow grille integrated with angular headlamps, projecting a visually assertive yet refined identity. Mechanically, the TX concept was equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This unit produced approximately 144 kilowatts of power and 190 newton-meters of torque, delivered to all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission. The drivetrain configuration, combined with elevated ground clearance and wide track proportions, supported the vehicle’s classification as a performance-oriented compact SUV. Interior details of the TX were not extensively disclosed in public presentations; however, available images suggest a layout consistent with prevailing concept vehicle standards, including elevated seating, an emphasis on digital display integration, and a minimalistic treatment of control surfaces. The vehicle’s reception within the design community was notable. In 2013, the TX received the “Best Concept Car of the Year” designation at the Geneva International Motor Show, becoming the first Chinese concept vehicle to receive such recognition. The design themes introduced by the TX were subsequently adapted into production in the Tiggo 7 model launched in 2016. The Chery TX remains significant within the broader narrative of early twenty-first-century Chinese automotive design. It represents a deliberate alignment with global design methodologies and a formal expression of the country’s ambition to reposition its automotive industry within the context of international aesthetic and engineering standards.
