01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1400 Supergioiello, introduced at the 1951 Turin Motor Show, represented a refined exercise in coachbuilt elegance based on Fiat’s first post-war unibody model. Among the variations shown that year by Carrozzeria Ghia was a distinct two-door coupé version featuring a subtly modified front end from the first series. Its lines drew visual parallels to the contemporary Lancia Aurelia B20 GT, particularly in the shaping of the grille and front fenders, indicating the influence of contemporary Gran Turismo styling trends. While Ghia was initially involved in the design development of the Lancia B20, production responsibilities were ultimately assumed by Carrozzeria Viotti. Despite this, the visual dialogue between the Fiat 1400 Supergioiello coupé and the Lancia B20 reflects the shared design language circulating among Italian coachbuilders in the early 1950s. The two-door coupé was part of a broader exploration of body styles on the Fiat 1400 platform. Ghia also presented four-door sedan and open cabriolet variants under the same Supergioiello design, each interpreting the base model with different degrees of formality and elegance. These iterations highlight Ghia’s capacity to rework standard production platforms into limited-production models suited to individual client preferences. Built on the Fiat 1400’s standard wheelbase and powered by a 1.4-litre overhead-valve inline-four engine, the Supergioiello variants retained mechanical fidelity to the factory model. However, the reimagined bodywork introduced more sophisticated proportions, refined detailing, and a more luxurious interior presentation, reinforcing Ghia’s reputation as a premier postwar design house and underscoring the fluid boundaries between mass production and artisanal craftsmanship in early 1950s Italy.
