01 / THE STORY

History & context

In the autumn of 1967, two BMW 1600 GT Cabriolets, designed by the renowned Italian designer Pietro Frua, were completed at the Dingolfing factory. These rare vehicles began their testing period shortly thereafter, but tragedy struck when one of the cars was involved in a severe accident during testing and was subsequently demolished. The remaining car, however, was approved for road use and was presented to Herbert Quandt, the largest BMW shareholder at the time. This unique BMW 1600 GT Cabrio Frua remained in Quandt’s possession for many years before passing through the hands of various private collectors. The car’s significance was eventually recognized by the experts at BMW Group Classic, the division of BMW dedicated to preserving the company’s heritage. They acquired the vehicle and embarked on an ambitious restoration project, which was assigned to a group of aspiring technicians and mechanics at the BMW training center. The restoration process was challenging, particularly due to the difficulty in sourcing original parts, many of which had long been out of production. Despite these hurdles, the restoration was completed successfully, showcasing the team’s dedication and expertise. The restored BMW 1600 GT Cabrio Frua now occupies a prestigious place within the BMW Group Classic’s historic collection. This rare and exclusive model not only exemplifies the innovative design and engineering of BMW during the 1960s but also highlights the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its restoration. The car stands as a testament to BMW’s rich heritage and the ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate its historical milestones.
