01 / THE STORY

History & context

The BMW Glas 3000 GT was a two-door grand touring coupé produced from 1967 to 1968. It represented the final and most advanced iteration of the Glas GT series developed by Hans Glas GmbH prior to and immediately following the company’s acquisition by Bayerische Motoren Werke AG in 1966. Positioned as a high-performance touring vehicle, the 3000 GT embodied a synthesis of German engineering and Italian styling during a transitional phase in BMW’s product portfolio. The 3000 GT was derived from the Glas 2600 V8, itself a notable vehicle for employing a belt-driven overhead camshaft V8 engine, a relatively advanced feature in the mid-1960s. The engine displacement was increased to 2,982 cubic centimeters, yielding a power output of approximately 160 horsepower. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. The car was capable of reaching a top speed in the vicinity of 200 kilometers per hour, aligning it with contemporary grand touring standards. The exterior design was executed by Pietro Frua, an Italian stylist noted for his contributions to various European marques. The vehicle featured a low-slung silhouette with clean, linear surfaces and restrained detailing. Although marketed under the BMW brand, the 3000 GT did not incorporate the brand’s signature twin-kidney grille, maintaining visual continuity with its Glas lineage. Its design has drawn comparisons to Frua’s work for Maserati, earning the vehicle the informal nickname “Glaserati.” Interior appointments included leather upholstery, wood veneer trim, and comprehensive instrumentation for the period. Seating was configured for two adults with occasional rear accommodations. Ride quality and handling were engineered to support long-distance touring, with independent front suspension and a live rear axle. Production was limited to 389 units, all manufactured between 1967 and 1968. The model was soon discontinued as BMW consolidated its lineup and phased out legacy Glas models in favor of unified design and engineering frameworks. The BMW-Glas 3000 GT occupies a distinct position within BMW’s historical narrative, representing both the culmination of Glas’s independent technical development and an early example of BMW’s integration of external design partnerships into its product strategy.
