01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 2100 Coupé Boneschi Linea Tesa is a landmark in automotive design, representing the first model to showcase the groundbreaking “linee tese” or “sharp lines” design language developed by Carrozzeria Boneschi in collaboration with industrial designer Rodolfo Bonetto. Unveiled at the 1960 Turin Auto Salon, the Fiat 2100 Coupé was the first of its kind to feature this bold, minimalist design, which would go on to influence car styling in the decades to follow. Although the concept of sharp, angular lines was first realized with the 1958 Innocenti Goggomobil Weekend, the Fiat 2100 Coupé truly marked the moment this design language entered the mainstream. The car was a striking departure from the flowing, rounded curves that characterized much of the automotive design of the era. Instead, the Fiat 2100 Coupé embraced clean, crisp lines that ran the length of the car, with a more geometric, square-edged profile. The overall effect was a sleek and modern look that was far ahead of its time. The Fiat 2100 Coupé’s design emphasized functionality and simplicity, with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency and a striking, cohesive form. The flat roofline, angular rear, and bold front grille made the car instantly recognizable, and the “linee tese” language lent it a futuristic, almost industrial appearance. The car’s sculpted bodywork and minimal ornamentation allowed its sharp lines to take center stage, giving it a clean, purposeful aesthetic. Although the Fiat 2100 Coupé was not mass-produced, its design set the tone for a new era of automotive styling. The “linee tese” philosophy would influence not only future Boneschi creations but also the broader direction of car design in the 1960s and beyond. With its futuristic looks and pioneering design, the Fiat 2100 Coupé remains a significant milestone in automotive history and a testament to the vision of Boneschi and Bonetto.
