01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1400 Coupé Sport by Boano is a rare coachbuilt model constructed in only a few known examples during the early 1950s. Built entirely in aluminum, the car reflects the transitional aesthetics of the period, with a form that likely originated from a design sketch by Gian Paolo Boano. Though officially based on the Fiat 1400 chassis, period advertisements suggest it was also available for the larger 1900 platform. The body presents several stylistic traits seen in the Ghia B Junior series, including a clean roofline and flowing contours that anticipate later Italian-American design exchanges. The rear section is marked by a three-piece rear window configuration, an uncommon treatment that enhances rear visibility while contributing to the car’s distinctive greenhouse design. At the rear, the trunk lid features a pronounced, rounded form, apparently shaped to accommodate a spare wheel housed vertically—a layout reminiscent of American-style continental kits. This combination of European scale with American detailing gives the car a hybrid visual identity, aligned with the coachbuilding trends of the era. Although not a mass-produced model, the 1400 Coupé Sport served as a showcase of Boano’s design capabilities and ambitions. Its restrained ornamentation and resolved proportions emphasize material quality and surface refinement over excessive decoration. The result is a coupe that sits apart from Fiat’s production cars in both concept and execution. With its handmade aluminum body, experimental styling, and obscure production history, the Fiat 1400 Coupé Sport Boano remains a seldom-seen but telling expression of early postwar Italian carrozzeria culture.
