01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lamborghini P140 Bertone, a design proposal from 1987, ultimately never reached production. This concept, although devoid of an actual engine, served as a compelling styling study aimed at shaping Lamborghini’s future aesthetic trajectory. Crafted by the esteemed Italian design house Bertone, the P140 emanated a futuristic allure, characterized by sleek lines and bold contours that hinted at Lamborghini’s penchant for pushing the boundaries of automotive design. Despite lacking the renowned V10 engine that would later become synonymous with Lamborghini’s performance prowess, the Lamborghini P140 Bertone captivated onlookers with its striking visual presence. However, Lamborghini, under the ownership of Chrysler at the time, opted to pursue an alternative design direction. Instead, the company chose a concept designed by Marcello Gandini, the celebrated designer behind iconic Lamborghini models such as the Miura and the Countach. This decision resulted in the creation of at least three prototypes equipped with engines, which later served as the foundation for the Italdesign Calà and the Gallardo, both powered by the P140 V10 engine. While the Lamborghini P140 Bertone may not have seen production, its legacy endures as a testament to the innovative spirit of Lamborghini and the creative vision of Bertone. Although relegated to the realm of concept cars, its design continues to inspire automotive enthusiasts, serving as a glimpse into the bold possibilities that lay ahead for Lamborghini’s design language.
