01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat X1/9 Turbo was an official prototype developed by Carrozzeria Bertone in the early 1980s. Based on the production Fiat X1/9—a mid-engined sports car designed by Marcello Gandini and manufactured by Fiat from 1972 to 1982, and subsequently by Bertone until 1989—the Turbo prototype aimed to explore the performance potential of turbocharging within the X1/9’s compact and balanced chassis. While the standard X1/9 was powered by naturally aspirated inline-four engines, the Turbo prototype featured a turbocharged version of Fiat’s SOHC engine, enhancing power output and performance characteristics. This modification was intended to address critiques regarding the X1/9’s modest power, without compromising its renowned handling and mid-engine balance. The Turbo prototype retained the distinctive wedge-shaped design, targa top, and pop-up headlights characteristic of the X1/9. However, it incorporated subtle aerodynamic enhancements and possibly unique badging to distinguish it from standard models. Interior modifications may have included sportier instrumentation and trim to reflect its performance-oriented nature. Despite its potential, the X1/9 Turbo remained a prototype and did not enter mass production. Factors such as production costs, market positioning, and the broader economic climate likely influenced this decision. Nonetheless, the prototype demonstrated Bertone’s commitment to innovation and performance within the constraints of compact sports car design. Today, the Fiat X1/9 Turbo prototype is recognized as a unique example of 1980s automotive experimentation. It highlights the collaborative efforts between Fiat and Bertone to push the boundaries of their existing models, and it remains a point of interest for enthusiasts and historians of Italian automotive design.
