01 / THE STORY
History & context
Jaguar XK150 Bertone was built by Bertone in Turin in 1957 on the Jaguar XK150 chassis. Franco Scaglione designed the car, which was produced in a limited series of three. It was shown at 1957 Torino, where Bertone presented a Jaguar-based interpretation with a compact glazed cabin, a slender rear treatment and a broad frontal composition over Jaguar mechanicals.
The bodywork uses a clean, restrained form rather than the standard XK150 appearance. Its bodyside carries a sculpted line beginning at the front fender and continuing along the flank. The greenhouse is shortened, yet remains light in proportion. This contrast between the low body and the glazed upper structure gives the car a long, controlled profile.
At the rear, the XK150 Bertone narrows into a slim tail. The front fascia forms a strong visual counterpoint, concealing the Jaguar engine beneath a smooth, integrated surface. Scaglione’s design keeps exterior decoration to a minimum, relying instead on the relationship between the fenders, bodyside line, roof and tail. The car’s proportions combine a long Jaguar-based chassis with a body of notably reduced visual bulk.
The XK150 appeared during a period in which Bertone was also responsible for the Aston Martin DB2/4 Bertone and the Maserati 3500 GT Bertone. The Jaguar shares elements of the Maserati’s formal vocabulary, particularly in its clear side treatment and concise rearward line, while retaining a distinct identity on its Jaguar foundation. Its low silhouette and compact cabin place the emphasis on the body’s continuous surfaces rather than on brightwork or applied ornament.
Only three Jaguar XK150 Bertones were produced. Two recorded chassis numbers are S834365 and S824439. The limited production placed the car outside Jaguar’s regular XK150 body programme and preserved it as one of Bertone’s few Jaguar-based designs of the period.
The three-car production figure, the 1957 Turin presentation, Bertone construction and Scaglione styling define the documented outline of the model. Within that small series, the Jaguar XK150 chassis and engine provided the mechanical basis, while the Turin-built body supplied the altered roofline, sculpted flanks and tapered tail. The two recorded chassis numbers are S834365 and S824439.
Bertone built the Jaguar XK150 Bertone as a limited 1957 series of three cars, with styling by Franco Scaglione. The model was shown at 1957 Torino, and recorded chassis include S834365 and S824439. The body combined a shortened greenhouse, sculpted bodyside lines from the front fenders, a slender tail and a broad front treatment over the Jaguar XK150 chassis.
The Jaguar XK150 Bertone was a 1957 Turin-built special by Bertone, based on the Jaguar XK150 chassis and designed by Franco Scaglione. Its exterior featured a shortened, light greenhouse, sculpted sides, a slim tail and a strong front fascia. Three were produced, with S834365 and S824439 among the recorded chassis numbers. It was exhibited at 1957 Torino.
