01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Bertone, designed by Franco Scaglione, represents an important moment in the brand’s design history. With its highly sculpted, aerodynamic forms, the car exemplified the cutting-edge styling of Scaglione’s work in the early 1950s. However, the complexity of these lines proved impractical for mass production, prompting Alfa Romeo to turn to Pininfarina, which simplified the design for series production while maintaining its elegance and character. The Giulietta Spider Bertone, produced in only two prototypes, was initially presented by Carrozzeria Bertone to Alfa Romeo as a proposal for the open version of the Giulietta. Although the design was not selected for mass production, the prototype remains an iconic representation of Bertone’s creative vision. One of the two prototypes was retained by Alfa Romeo, while the second, with chassis number 2, was sold to the prominent American dealer, Hoffman. The Bertone-designed Giulietta Spider stands out with its ultra-modern, aerodynamic nose, a feature that was ahead of its time. The two-tone paintwork further accentuates the car’s distinctive styling, underscoring its contemporary elegance. This design reflects the influence of Italian automotive craftsmanship, where form and function converge in a harmonious package. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Bertone is a rare and highly regarded example of mid-20th-century automotive design. It is part of the prestigious Lopresto Collection, serving as a testament to the innovative work of Franco Scaglione and the historical importance of Carrozzeria Bertone. While it never entered production, the prototype remains a valuable and admired piece of automotive heritage.
