01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 500 B Olympic was a postwar special-bodied variant developed in 1948 by Carrozzeria Accossato, the Turin-based coachbuilder founded by Ernesto Accossato. The project was conceived within the context of Fiat’s early efforts to diversify the 500 B range in response to the practical demands of the immediate post–World War II market, where versatility and affordability were primary considerations. Unlike the factory-developed 500 B Giardiniera produced by Fiat’s in-house Carrozzerie Speciali, the Olympic was built on the mechanical base of the Fiat 500 B Camioncino. This choice allowed Accossato to exploit the Camioncino’s reinforced rear structure and load-oriented layout while adapting it to a mixed passenger-and-cargo configuration. The resulting body featured an enclosed rear compartment integrated into the original proportions of the 500 B, offering increased utility without significantly altering the vehicle’s compact footprint. The Olympic was positioned as a cost-effective alternative to the factory Giardiniera. Contemporary sources indicate that it was priced approximately 50,000 lire less than the Fiat-built 500 B Giardiniera, a substantial difference in the late-1940s Italian market. This pricing strategy suggests that the Olympic was aimed at small tradesmen, professionals, or families requiring occasional cargo capacity without the premium associated with factory special bodies. Mechanically, the Fiat 500 B Olympic retained the standard rear-engine layout of the 500 B series. Power was provided by Fiat’s small-displacement inline four-cylinder engine, coupled to a lightweight chassis optimized for low running costs and ease of maintenance. Suspension and drivetrain components followed standard Fiat practice, ensuring compatibility with existing service networks. Production numbers were extremely limited, reflecting both Accossato’s artisanal scale and the transitional nature of the project. Only a single surviving example of the Fiat 500 B Olympic is currently reported, documented in specialist archives and private collections.
