01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Triumph 2000 / 2500 facelift was introduced at the end of 1969 to update Triumph’s executive saloon range for the new decade. The redesign was carried out by Giovanni Michelotti, who had already been responsible for the original Triumph 2000 bodywork introduced in 1963. The facelift mainly affected the front end, the interior and, on the saloon, the rear section. The original front treatment was replaced by a cleaner and more horizontal design, with four round headlamps integrated into a new full-width grille. The position lights and indicators were placed at the outer edges, giving the car a wider and more modern appearance. The result was more elegant and contemporary, although less distinctive than the earlier Michelotti design. Inside, the car received a new dashboard. The layout was simpler and more refined, with a clearer instrument arrangement and a more effective use of wood trim, one of the defining features of British executive cars of the period. On the saloon, the rear was also revised, with new horizontal tail lamps and a redesigned boot lid. The Estate retained its original rear treatment. Mechanically, there were no major structural changes. The range continued with the Triumph 2000, powered by a 1,998 cc six-cylinder engine producing around 90 hp, and the 2500 PI, using a 2,498 cc fuel-injected six-cylinder engine with approximately 132 hp. The range was later expanded with the 2500 S, a carburettor-fed version producing about 114 hp, positioned between the 2000 and the 2500 PI. Its introduction is often linked to the reliability issues associated with the Lucas fuel-injection system. An interesting historical note concerns the relationship between this Michelotti design language and the Mazda Luce. According to later claims connected to the Michelotti circle, elements of the Triumph front-end theme may have influenced, or even been reused by Bertone, in the development of the Mazda Luce. The matter remains debated, but the visual relationship between the cars has made the facelifted Triumph an important reference in discussions around Michelotti, Bertone and the Luce design.
