01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 507 bodied by Carrozzeria Casaro represents a high-end coachbuilt variant of the standard 507 chassis, produced by Fiat between 1926 and 1927. Commissioned by Prince Odescalchi, this vehicle exemplifies the custom-built luxury automobiles of the interwar period, when coachbuilders were frequently tasked with creating bespoke bodies for clients of status. The underlying chassis retained the mechanical specifications of the production model, including a 2,296 cc inline-four engine and a four-speed manual transmission. The 507 was derived from the earlier 505 and shared its general platform and drivetrain, with refinements aimed at improving comfort and reliability for upper-segment buyers. Carrozzeria Mario Casaro, based in Turin, was active in the 1920s and became known for its refined closed-body styles and early adoption of lightweight construction systems. This specific example features a fully enclosed coupé body referred to in period literature as “gran lusso di costruzione normale,” denoting a standardised yet upscale interpretation of the type. While the term “coupé” might suggest a two-door configuration in later automotive nomenclature, in the context of the 1920s, it could describe formal closed-body cars with two or more rows of seating and a partitioned or semi-partitioned cabin. The Casaro-built body is characterized by upright proportions, a vertical windshield, step-plate running boards, and dual side-mounted spare wheels. The construction likely involved a wooden framework skinned in steel or aluminium panels, in keeping with the techniques of the period. The vehicle’s silhouette, details, and material finish reflect the intended use as a formal, chauffeur-driven vehicle for a noble client. Few such examples survive, and period photography or documentation remains the primary source for the reconstruction of its configuration and design. As an example of Fiat’s collaboration with independent coachbuilders, the Casaro-bodied 507 illustrates the customisation possibilities offered to elite clientele during the late 1920s.
