01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Alfa Romeo 164 RT by Pininfarina, marks a significant chapter in the history of the Italian automaker, particularly as a bridge between the original 164 and the subsequent 166. This restyling, known as the 164 RT (Restyling Totale), was designed by Pininfarina and represented a considerable stylistic evolution for the brand. The challenge of replacing the 164, which had enjoyed considerable success since its launch in 1987, was not straightforward. The process involved various design proposals developed by renowned designers such as Bertone and Alfa Romeo’s Styling Center, each presenting different visions for the Biscione’s flagship model. Among these proposals, the 164 RT stands out for its elegant and modern design, while still retaining the distinctive features that characterize the Alfa Romeo identity. In the final development phase, a real “battle” took place over the design of the front end, featuring either small, tapered lights or the “156” front end designed by Walter de Silva. This clash of ideas unfolded in Arese, where the concepts were debated, leading to a thoughtful reflection on the brand’s future directions. The question of the delay in introducing the 166 has been a topic of discussion. Some witnesses from Turin and Milan suggest that the launch of the new flagship was postponed to avoid cannibalizing the market for the less convincing Lancia K. This reasoning, while debatable, highlights the marketing strategy that Alfa Romeo had to adopt to prevent internal conflicts and maximize sales. Ultimately, the 166 arrived in 1998, marking a new chapter for Alfa Romeo while maintaining a strong connection to the roots represented by the 164.

- Production notes
- Pininfarina is represented as design studio for the 1990 164 RT Restyling Totale proposal, not as a physical series coachbuilder. Numeric one-off production count is cleared because the source documents a design proposal/model rather than a completed production vehicle.
Engine & performance
- Specification notes
- Alfa Romeo 164 RT Pininfarina design proposal: the canonical record represents a styling/design-proposal stage rather than a uniquely specified running vehicle. The current source dossier does not establish a project-specific powertrain or technical package; production-model specifications are deliberately not inherited.
