Giorgetto Giugiaro Involved in Off-Road Accident in Sardinia — Stable After Crash

July 26, 2025

Porto Cervo, Sardinia – July 25, 2025
Famed automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, 86, was involved in a serious off-road accident in Sardinia while driving a Land Rover Defender 110. The incident occurred in the Abbiadori area near Porto Cervo, along a winding coastal road known for its challenging curves.

According to initial reports, the vehicle veered unexpectedly before a right-hand bend, crashed through a low wall, and plunged down a steep embankment. The Defender rolled several meters and landed on its left side on a lower section of the same road.

Despite the severity of the crash, Giugiaro was able to exit the vehicle on his own, visibly shaken but conscious. Emergency services arrived promptly, and the designer was airlifted to Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in Olbia for observation. He sustained some non-life-threatening injuries and remains under medical supervision as a precaution.

Fabrizio Giugiaro, his son and fellow designer, confirmed to reporters:

°I spoke with my father shortly after the accident. He seemed clear-headed, just a bit dazed from the airbag deployment. The car went straight at the curve and tumbled down about 20 meters, finally resting on one side at the hairpin below. They ran a CT scan at the hospital, and he’s expected to be discharged within a couple of days wearing a support brace.”

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident. Mechanical failure, road conditions, or a momentary lapse in control have not been ruled out. While the crash could have resulted in far more serious consequences, Giugiaro’s condition is reported as stable and not cause for concern.

Giorgetto Giugiaro is widely regarded as one of the most influential car designers in history, with a legacy that spans decades and includes iconic models for brands such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Volkswagen, and many others.
