Shanghai, China — At the recent Auto Shanghai 2025, Italian design powerhouse Pininfarina and Chinese electric vehicle innovator NIO unveiled their collaborative creation: the Firefly, a compact electric hatchback poised to redefine urban driving.

Pininfarina, renowned for its legacy in automotive design, played a pivotal role in shaping the Firefly’s digital development. Leveraging its extensive experience in surface modeling, the company contributed to both the exterior and interior surfacing of the vehicle. This collaboration, involving Pininfarina’s design studios in Italy, Shanghai, and Miami, exemplifies the firm’s global reach and commitment to long-term partnerships with industry leaders .

The Firefly stands out with its youthful and energetic design, featuring distinctive triple-circle headlamps and a sleek, minimalist interior. Measuring 4,003 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,615 mm, the five-door hatchback is tailored for city life, offering a turning radius of just 4.7 meters .

Under the hood, the Firefly is equipped with a 105 kW rear-mounted electric motor powered by a 42.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, delivering a CLTC range of 420 km. Notably, the vehicle supports NIO’s fifth-generation battery swapping technology, allowing for quick energy replenishment and reducing downtime .

Inside, the Firefly boasts a dual-screen setup, a floating center console, and a minimalist dashboard, all designed to enhance the driving experience. The cabin offers ample storage with 27 compartments and features a 14-speaker 7.1 surround sound system. Safety is paramount, with the vehicle achieving a five-star rating under the 2024 C-NCAP standards and incorporating nine airbags alongside advanced driver-assistance systems.

Initially launched in China in April 2025, the Firefly is set to enter 16 international markets, including several European countries, later this year. This strategic move underscores NIO’s ambition to compete globally in the compact EV segment, positioning the Firefly as a stylish and affordable alternative to models like the Mini Cooper and Smart ForTwo.

The collaboration between Pininfarina and NIO on the Firefly project highlights the fusion of Italian design excellence with Chinese technological innovation, setting a new benchmark in the realm of electric urban mobility.
