01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Siata Daina SL Berlinetta, bodied by Carrozzeria Bertone, is a rare Italian sports coupé produced in the early 1950s. Developed by Società Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori (SIATA), a Turin-based company founded in 1926, the Daina series was introduced in 1950 and remained in production until 1958. The Daina models were based on heavily modified Fiat 1400 mechanicals, featuring reinforced and shortened chassis, as well as upgraded engines with new cylinder heads, manifolds, carburetors, and, in some cases, Abarth exhaust systems. The Daina SL (Scatolato Lamiera, meaning “sheet metal box”) variant utilized a steel box-section frame, enhancing structural rigidity. The Berlinetta version, designed by Bertone, showcased a sleek and aerodynamic body, reflecting the design trends of the era. These vehicles were equipped with Fiat-sourced overhead valve inline-four engines, available in 1.4L, 1.5L, or 1.8L configurations, and paired with either a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission. The suspension system featured independent front suspension and a live rear axle with coil springs, while braking was managed by four-wheel drum brakes.  Production numbers for the Daina series were limited, with approximately 200 to 250 units built across all variants. The Berlinetta models by Bertone are particularly rare, and their precise production figures remain uncertain. These vehicles are highly sought after by collectors due to their combination of Italian engineering, bespoke coachwork, and historical significance. The Siata Daina SL Berlinetta exemplifies the collaborative spirit of post-war Italian automotive design, merging SIATA’s performance-focused engineering with Bertone’s distinctive styling. Its rarity and craftsmanship make it a notable example of mid-20th-century sports car development.
