01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Delaunay-Belleville U6 bodied by Carrozzeria Castagna in 1929 represents a unique example of interwar European coachbuilding. Constructed on a U6-series chassis produced by the French firm Société des Automobiles Delaunay-Belleville, the vehicle received a one-off body from Carrozzeria Castagna of Milan. It is among the few known instances in which a Delaunay-Belleville chassis was clothed by an Italian coachbuilder. The exact chassis number remains undocumented in surviving records. The U6 model, produced in limited quantities during the late 1920s, was equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine of proprietary Delaunay-Belleville design. Engine displacement and performance specifications are not conclusively recorded for this specific chassis. The mechanical configuration is presumed to align with standard U6 characteristics, including a side-valve six-cylinder layout and a conventional ladder-frame chassis. Carrozzeria Castagna, active in Milan since the late 19th century, was among the most prominent Italian coachbuilders of the period, known for producing custom bodies for European luxury marques. The body constructed for the Delaunay-Belleville U6 in question is understood to have been commissioned by a private client and executed in a bespoke configuration, likely featuring formal lines and conservative ornamentation consistent with Castagna’s style during the late 1920s. Documentation of the vehicle’s early ownership and usage is lacking. No records from Delaunay-Belleville or Castagna have been publicly disclosed concerning the original purchaser or intended use. The car re-emerged in the 21st century, appearing at the Auto Moto Classic exhibition in Toulouse in 2020, attributed to Castagna’s historical portfolio. No additional provenance has been confirmed, and its custodial history between 1929 and the exhibition remains unknown. The body is presumed to be original, though restoration history has not been disclosed. No secondary units of the same design are known to exist, and the vehicle is considered unique. Its preservation contributes to the limited corpus of surviving Delaunay-Belleville automobiles and exemplifies the late custom-bodied phase of the brand prior to its decline. The car remains unregistered in standard public chassis registries, and no verified engine number or drivetrain identification has been published.
