01 / THE STORY
History & context
The 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Pininfarina Berlinetta, chassis 0378AM, is a unique one-off creation, embodying Ferrari’s racing pedigree with the refined elegance of Pininfarina. Built on the powerful 375 MM platform, this right-hand-drive Berlinetta was finished in Max Meyer metallic blue (015882) with a beige interior and distinguished by its inclusion of bumpers, an unusual feature for a competition-derived Ferrari of this era. Equipped with a 4.5-liter Lampredi V12 engine, the 375 MM was one of Ferrari’s most potent models of the early 1950s, originally developed for endurance racing. The high-displacement V12, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission, delivered immense power and torque, making it a dominant force in events such as the Mille Miglia and Carrera Panamericana. While many 375 MMs were built as open-top Spiders, chassis 0378AM featured a striking Berlinetta body by Pininfarina, showcasing flowing lines and an aggressive yet refined presence. The car was delivered in early 1954 and was associated with Max Wax/Vitale, a prominent figure in the Italian automotive paint industry based in Genoa. It carried the Italian registration “73400 GE”, but beyond this initial ownership, much of its subsequent history remains unknown. After passing through the ownership of several devoted car collectors in Europe, 0378AM was eventually entrusted to Dino Cognolato, a world-renowned expert in the restoration of vintage Ferraris. Cognolato carried out a meticulous restoration of the vehicle, bringing it back to its original glory. His efforts were rewarded when the car won the “Best of Show” award at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance Louis Vuitton in 2000, a testament to both the car’s significance and the skill of its restorer. The Ferrari 250 MM Berlinetta Pininfarina chassis 0378AM is not only a piece of automotive history but also a testament to the passion and craftsmanship that surrounds Ferrari’s legacy. From its early days with Dr. Enrico Wax to its triumphant restoration, this car remains a shining example of Ferrari’s impact on both racing and luxury automotive culture.
