01 / THE STORY
History & context
he Chevrolet Camaro CS 327 Coupé was a one-off prototype completed in 1968 by Pietro Frua, developed on the mechanical basis of a first-generation Chevrolet Camaro. The project was undertaken independently by the Turin coachbuilder as a stylistic study applying Italian coachbuilding practice to an American pony-car platform. The car was first presented at the 1968 Paris Motor Show and subsequently exhibited at the 1969 New York International Auto Show. The prototype retained the Camaro’s unibody structure and front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration. Power was supplied by Chevrolet’s 327-cubic-inch small-block V8, paired with standard transmission components. Suspension, braking, and drivetrain systems followed contemporary Camaro specifications, indicating that the intervention focused on body design rather than mechanical development. Frua replaced the production bodywork with a bespoke steel coupé body shaped in Turin. The new design revised the car’s proportions through a lower and more tapered front end, reduced front overhang, and smoother transitions between fenders and body sides. The front fascia departed from Chevrolet’s production identity, eliminating the twin-headlamp arrangement in favor of a single horizontal grille with integrated lighting. Surface treatment emphasized continuity and restraint, contrasting with the pronounced sculpting of the standard Camaro. The roofline was reshaped into a fastback configuration with a gradual rear slope, visually extending the rear deck. Side panels were simplified, with a straight beltline and limited brightwork. Wheel arches were modestly flared and integrated into the body without accentuation. The rear bodywork employed a horizontal layout with custom lamp elements specific to the prototype. Interior architecture remained largely unchanged from production specification, with adjustments limited to trim and fitment necessitated by the new body shell. Period documentation records the car in different exterior colors and wheel designs during its Paris and New York appearances. Subsequent documentation of the CS 327 Coupé is limited. Surviving photographic records and motor-show listings constitute the primary sources for its configuration and exhibition history.
