01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A, chassis 1295, was completed in 1928 with bespoke coachwork by Cesare Sala and commissioned for Assunta Bruchi Ponzo of Rome. The car belongs to the mature phase of Tipo 8A production, the most advanced and prestigious chassis offered by Isotta Fraschini during the interwar period. As standard practice for the marque, the vehicle was delivered as a rolling chassis and bodied to individual order, reflecting the dominance of bespoke craftsmanship in the late-1920s luxury market. Introduced in 1924, the Tipo 8A represented the pinnacle of Isotta Fraschini engineering. It was powered by a 7.3-litre inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead valves, engineered for smoothness, elasticity, and silent operation rather than outright speed. The chassis incorporated servo-assisted brakes, a long wheelbase suitable for formal bodies, and suspension calibrated for comfort during sustained high-speed travel. These characteristics made the 8A a preferred platform for aristocratic and upper-bourgeois clientele. Cesare Sala’s body for chassis 1295 followed a formal luxury idiom consistent with Roman and Parisian taste of the period. The design emphasized vertical proportions, a long bonnet, and a clearly defined passenger compartment, with restrained use of brightwork. Construction employed traditional coachbuilding techniques, with a wooden frame covered by hand-formed metal panels. Interior fittings were executed to the client’s specifications, with attention to comfort and finish rather than ostentation. Chassis 1295 was presented at the 1929 Rome Concorso d’Eleganza, where it was awarded Best of Show, confirming contemporary recognition of both its formal execution and overall presence. The award placed the car among the most highly regarded Italian luxury automobiles of its time and reinforced Cesare Sala’s standing among leading coachbuilders.
