01 / THE STORY

History & context

The JAC BMPV was the final project designed by Pininfarina for the Chinese automaker JAC, marking the end of a notable collaboration between the two companies. Unveiled at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show, the JAC BMPV was a compact city car designed to appeal to urban dwellers seeking an affordable yet stylish vehicle for daily commuting. With its modern and sleek design, the JAC BMPV was built to meet the needs of the growing Chinese market for small, fuel-efficient vehicles. The car’s compact size made it highly maneuverable, ideal for navigating crowded city streets. Pininfarina’s signature design influence is evident in the BMPV’s smooth lines and aerodynamic form, which was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The JAC BMPV featured a practical layout with a spacious interior for its size, offering comfort for both the driver and passengers. Despite its small dimensions, the car provided an efficient use of space, with well-thought-out features for convenience and usability in city environments. The vehicle was also equipped with energy-efficient technology to help meet the rising demand for eco-friendly transportation options in China. Under the hood, the BMPV was powered by a small engine that aimed to strike a balance between performance and fuel efficiency. It catered to the urban market’s preference for economical vehicles, while still delivering enough power for daily driving needs. Although the JAC BMPV did not become a significant commercial success, it served as a testament to Pininfarina’s ability to blend style with practicality, even for entry-level models. It was the culmination of a partnership that saw Pininfarina shaping the design direction of several vehicles for JAC and contributed to the development of China’s automotive industry during the early 2000s.
