01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Autobianchi Runabout was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and presented at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. The prototype took direct inspiration from late-1960s racing speedboats, reflected in its open-top configuration, low profile, and nautical detailing. Despite its experimental styling, the Runabout served as the conceptual foundation for the later Fiat X1/9, developed using many of the same engineering principles. The car was built on a modified Autobianchi A112 platform but equipped with mechanical components from the Fiat 128. Power was provided by a transversely mounted 1,116 cc inline four-cylinder engine with a single overhead camshaft, producing approximately 55 hp. Power was transmitted to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The layout was mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, and the chassis featured independent suspension at both ends with MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. Braking was handled by disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear. Dimensions were approximately 3,780 mm in length, 1,780 mm in width, and 970 mm in height, with a weight estimated below 700 kg. The compact proportions and low center of gravity gave the car excellent balance and agility for its class. Steering was rack and pinion. The body was built entirely by Bertone using lightweight materials and finished in bright red with contrasting trim. The styling featured a pointed bow-shaped nose, low wind deflector in place of a windshield, and a pair of large roll bars rising behind the seats. These roll bars housed the headlamps, emphasizing the car’s futuristic aesthetic. The cabin was minimal, with two seats and a single central instrument resembling a nautical compass. The Runabout was displayed again at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it won its class, reaffirming its historical significance as a Bertone design experiment and a precursor to later mid-engine sports cars.

FIRST-PERSON 2026-09-25 — Gandini explicitly states that the 1969 Turin Runabout influenced the X1/9 and especially the Stratos, strengthening the canonical cross-project design-lineage relation.
