01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Zédel 10hp Alessio was a bespoke early automobile constructed circa 1908–1910, combining a Swiss-built Zédel mechanical platform with custom coachwork executed by Carrozzeria Alessio of Rome. The vehicle represents a characteristic example of prewar European collaboration between industrial manufacturers and artisanal bodybuilders, with production limited to a single known specimen. The chassis originated from Zédel, a Swiss manufacturer active from the final years of the 19th century through the early 1920s, prior to its absorption into Donnet-Zédel in France. The “10 hp” designation referred to its fiscal horsepower classification, rather than actual brake output. The engine was a front-mounted, inline four-cylinder petrol unit of approximately 1.8 to 2.0 litres in displacement. It featured side valves, water cooling, mechanical ignition, and a low compression ratio. Power output was estimated at 20 to 25 horsepower, suitable for light carriage applications. The transmission was manual, utilizing two or three forward speeds, with chain drive to the rear axle. Suspension comprised semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear, and braking was by rear mechanical drums or external contracting bands, depending on specification. Coachwork was executed in Rome by Alessio, a short-lived but refined carrozzeria known for formal and ceremonial automobile bodies in the first decade of the twentieth century. The Zédel 10 hp received a landaulet or limousine-style body, possibly with a detachable rear roof section, fully enclosed passenger cabin, and open driver’s compartment. Construction was typical of the period: a wooden frame, hand-formed sheet metal body panels, and polished brass fittings. The cabin was likely upholstered in leather or cloth, with folding jump seats and side windows operated by leather straps or sliding mechanisms. Production was restricted to a single documented example. No chassis number or engine serial is publicly recorded. The car was reportedly shown at the Rome Motor Salon in 1909. Ownership was associated with an unnamed member of the Italian nobility. The vehicle’s post-exhibition history is unknown, and no surviving example has been located in institutional or private collections. The Zédel 10hp Alessio remains a representative artifact of the pre-industrial phase of automobile construction, where mechanical production was supplemented by individually commissioned, hand-built bodywork tailored to social rank and ceremonial use.
