01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Volkswagen Gazzella by Carrozzeria Cattelan was a limited-production open vehicle constructed during the 1960s by the coachbuilding firm of Cattelan, based in Udine, Italy. Introduced in 1963, the Gazzella was conceived as a recreational adaptation of the Volkswagen Type 1 chassis, retaining the mechanical structure and powertrain of the standard Volkswagen Beetle while replacing the original closed body with a minimalist, open-top configuration suited for light leisure use. The underlying platform remained the classic rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with a flat-four, air-cooled engine mounted behind the axle. Engine displacement and output varied according to the donor vehicle, ranging from 1.1 to 1.3 litres during the production period. The transmission remained the standard four-speed manual as provided by Volkswagen. The suspension and braking systems were retained from the base Type 1 without modification, preserving the durability and mechanical simplicity for which the Beetle was known. Cattelan’s intervention was concentrated entirely upon the bodywork. The steel or fiberglass body of the Gazzella was reduced to a skeletal form, eliminating doors, side windows, and fixed roofing. Seating was typically limited to two or four occupants with vinyl or canvas upholstery. A canvas top and side curtains were offered on some examples, although the majority of units were intended for open-air motoring. The form drew influence from contemporaneous beach vehicles and lightweight summer cars, echoing the typology established by models such as the Fiat 600 Jolly. Production volumes were extremely limited. No centralized registry was maintained, and the total number of completed units remains uncertain, though most sources suggest fewer than one hundred examples. Chassis numbers were derived from the original Volkswagen numbering system, and the vehicles were constructed individually or in small batches, often on commission. No specific units have been publicly attributed to prominent ownership, and extant examples are held primarily in private collections or specialized museums focused on coachbuilt or derivative Volkswagen models. The Gazzella marked the final independent effort by Carrozzeria Cattelan, which ceased operations shortly after the model’s discontinuation in 1970. The vehicle remains a minor yet distinctive artifact of the period’s Italian carrozzeria culture, embodying a now-vanished mode of small-scale, design-driven adaptation of mass-produced mechanical platforms.
