01 / THE STORY

History & context

The 1979 Monteverdi Sierra Stationwagon is a unique, five-door station wagon based on the Dodge Aspen Station Wagon, representing a blend of American practicality and European luxury design. Built by Carrozzeria Fissore, a renowned Italian coachbuilder, this one-of-a-kind vehicle reflects the innovative approach of Swiss carmaker Peter Monteverdi, who was known for creating exclusive, high-end automobiles. The Sierra Stationwagon was part of Monteverdi’s efforts to produce luxury versions of existing American cars, tailoring them to appeal to a discerning European market. Monteverdi made several changes to the original Dodge Aspen design to give the Sierra Stationwagon its distinctive look. The front end of the vehicle was redesigned in line with Monteverdi’s typical styling cues, which often involved a more refined and upscale appearance. At the rear, the well-known bumpers and taillights from the Peugeot 504 Break were installed, creating a visual link to Monteverdi’s other models, particularly the Safari, which was Monteverdi’s luxury SUV. These alterations helped establish a family resemblance across Monteverdi’s lineup, giving the Sierra Stationwagon an elegant and coherent design identity. The concept behind the Sierra Stationwagon paralleled the luxury station wagon idea that Mercedes-Benz was exploring around the same time with the W123 series. Both vehicles aimed to offer the practicality of a station wagon with the upscale features and comfort typically reserved for sedans. However, Peter Monteverdi was skeptical about the market potential for a luxury station wagon, a sentiment that led to the Sierra Stationwagon remaining a one-off vehicle rather than entering production. This unique model was registered and approved for road use in Ticino, Switzerland, where it was regularly driven until the early 1980s. Today, the Monteverdi Sierra Stationwagon is preserved in Monteverdi’s car museum, serving as a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit and distinctive approach to luxury car design. As a bespoke creation, it highlights the craftsmanship of Carrozzeria Fissore and Monteverdi’s vision of merging American automotive underpinnings with European style and sophistication. The Sierra Stationwagon stands as a rare piece of automotive history, showcasing the luxury station wagon concept long before it became a mainstream segment.
