01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Lancia Medusa was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and presented at the 1980 Turin Auto Show. Developed by Italdesign, it was conceived as an aerodynamic research prototype, applying advanced aerodynamic solutions to a four-door configuration. The Medusa was based on the chassis and mechanical layout of the Lancia Montecarlo, using the same mid-mounted 1,995 cc Lampredi inline-four engine. This unit produced 120 PS at 6,000 rpm and 170 Nm of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Giugiaro’s design objective was to minimize drag, setting an initial target coefficient of 0.25. The final prototype achieved a drag coefficient of 0.263, while the original clay model, without mirrors or external fittings, recorded an even lower 0.255. The Medusa incorporated multiple design innovations to reach these figures, including pop-up headlamps, fully flush-mounted door handles, and continuous window glazing that sat level with the body surface. The turn indicators were recessed into the front fascia, and the doors extended into the roof to reduce aerodynamic turbulence along the upper body line. The structure followed a low-profile fastback sedan format, measuring approximately 4,405 mm in length, 1,813 mm in width, and 1,263 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. The body panels were crafted with minimal overhangs, and the windshield and roofline were integrated in a continuous curve to maintain smooth airflow. The chassis retained the double wishbone suspension and braking systems of the Montecarlo, ensuring compact mechanical packaging within the aerodynamic body. The Medusa’s concept served as the basis for subsequent Italdesign projects. A mock-up derivative, the DMC-24, was produced for the DeLorean Motor Company as a four-door sedan proposal. Another variation, the Lamborghini Marco Polo, advanced to prototype stage. The Medusa remains a study in aerodynamic efficiency and mechanical rationalization applied to a production-feasible format.
