01 / THE STORY

History & context

The GranStudio Iugo was a conceptual electric vehicle developed by GranStudio, a design consultancy headquartered in Turin, Italy. Introduced in 2018, the Iugo was conceived as a design study addressing the evolving demands of urban mobility. The project was intended to explore new spatial, ergonomic, and ecological paradigms for compact personal transportation within high-density environments. The Iugo adopted a compact monovolume body type, characterized by smooth surfacing, a high beltline, and substantial glazing areas. The external dimensions were optimized for maneuverability and parking efficiency in constrained city contexts. A notable design feature was its asymmetrical door configuration, which facilitated ingress and egress in limited space. The asymmetry extended to both visual composition and functional interaction, aiming to improve user experience through considered spatial articulation. Internally, the cabin was configured to accommodate four occupants. The interior layout emphasized openness and functional minimalism. A flat floor, made possible by the electric drivetrain architecture, enabled flexible seating arrangements and increased usable volume. Materials employed in the interior were selected for durability and environmental sustainability, consistent with the vehicle’s urban use case. The dashboard incorporated a centrally mounted digital interface, providing access to vehicle data, navigation, and communication functions. Control surfaces were designed with an emphasis on clarity and intuitive operation. The powertrain utilized a battery-electric configuration. While detailed technical specifications regarding battery capacity, motor output, or range were not disclosed, the system was designed to provide adequate performance for intra-urban travel. The vehicle’s lightweight construction and aerodynamic form were intended to contribute to energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The Iugo remained a concept model and was not intended for series production. Its function was to articulate a prospective vision of city transportation grounded in design efficiency, human-centered utility, and ecological responsibility. The concept reflects an ongoing discourse within automotive design focused on reconciling the spatial limitations of urban infrastructure with the imperatives of sustainable mobility. Within the typology of electric urban concept vehicles, the GranStudio Iugo is classified as an experimental platform addressing transportation design at the intersection of form, function, and emerging social behavior.
