01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat-Abarth 595 Sibona & Basano hardtop programme concerns lightweight fibreglass roof components supplied for Abarth-modified Fiat 500 derivatives. During 1964, Carrozzeria Sibona & Basano became involved in producing hardtop assemblies for the Abarth 595 and 695. Their work belonged to a specialist automotive components programme rather than to the creation of an entirely separate automobile model.

Established in Turin, Sibona & Basano developed a reputation for prototype construction and work with lightweight materials. The fibreglass Abarth roof project demonstrates a different aspect of that expertise: manufacturing an accessory fitted to an existing production-based car. It should not be described as proof that the firm constructed every body panel or supplied the complete structure of the Fiat-Abarth 595.

This entry is retained as a coachbuilding-related component programme, with the underlying Fiat-Abarth model distinguished from Sibona & Basano’s particular contribution. Exact quantities of roofs made, the range of installations and the histories of individual vehicles have not yet been established.

Production notes
Sibona & Basano's role is source-backed as supplier/manufacturer of lightweight fibreglass hardtops for Fiat-Abarth 595 and 695 from 1964. This canonical record is therefore a component/accessory programme, not a separately bodied 595. No coachbuilder/body-builder relation is projected to the whole vehicle.
