01 / THE STORY
History & context
The Fiat 16/20 HP was produced between 1903 and 1906 and represented one of the early standardized models in Fiat’s expanding range. It was offered with three different wheelbase lengths—2,120 mm, 2,585 mm, and 2,830 mm—to accommodate various body configurations, from formal carriages to lightweight open models. The car was powered by a front-mounted four-cylinder engine, a layout that was becoming the industry norm at the time. It had a chain final drive and a manual gearbox, with the engine capacity evolving through production to improve performance and reliability. The chassis design was consistent with early 20th-century engineering practices, employing a ladder frame with semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension front and rear. The example shown is preserved at the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile (MAUTO) in Turin. It features a two-seater body constructed by Carrozzeria Alessio, a Turin-based coachbuilder active during the early years of Italian automotive history. The body is configured as a “2 Posti” or two-seater sports version and is built on the shortest available 2,120 mm wheelbase. This version was designed with a focus on low weight and compact dimensions, favoring responsiveness and performance over passenger capacity or comfort. It is representative of early sports-bodied vehicles intended for personal transport and light competition use. Alessio’s coachwork features a minimal windscreen, exposed controls, and a narrow cockpit layout, all of which were typical of the era’s sporting body types. The paint and detailing reflect the stylistic conventions of pre-WWI motoring. Of the 690 units produced across all versions, few remain, particularly in short-wheelbase sports configuration. The 16/20 HP 2 Posti by Alessio is a documented example of early coachbuilt Fiat production and illustrates the transition from carriage-based body design to purpose-built automobile construction. Its presence in MAUTO underlines its significance in early Italian automotive history.
