01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 125 Coupé Eurostyle, presented at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, was an intriguing concept car that drew strong similarities to the Fiat 125 City, which had been introduced the previous year. While the two models shared a common foundation, the 125 Coupé Eurostyle introduced several distinct design changes that set it apart, most notably at the front. The radiator grille was redesigned, now slightly sloping downward to create a more dynamic and modern look. The headlights were recessed, losing the earlier covers, and a surrounding bumper was added, which resembled the design of the LMX Sirex, giving the car a sportier and more aggressive appearance. Despite these alterations, the 125 Coupé Eurostyle remained conceptually close to the Fiat 125 City, retaining much of its underlying structure and proportions. However, it’s unclear whether the Eurostyle was a completely new creation or if it was a result of a renovation and repainting of the earlier Fiat 125 City prototype. This ambiguity has contributed to the car’s mystique, as it’s difficult to determine if it was a full reworking or simply a reimagined version of the earlier design. The 125 Coupé Eurostyle’s public debut at the Turin Motor Show in 1969 caught the attention of automotive enthusiasts and the public alike, but despite its intriguing design, it appears that the model remained a one-off. There is no evidence to suggest that it went into production or even into further development, which makes it a rare and curious piece in Fiat’s history. Today, very little is known about the Fiat 125 Coupé Eurostyle. Its status as a concept car, combined with the uncertainty surrounding its origins, only adds to its allure among collectors and Fiat aficionados. The car remains a mysterious example of 1960s automotive experimentation, representing a brief, overlooked moment in Fiat’s design history.
