01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Fiat 1100 Cabriolet by Carrozzerie Speciali is a stylish and limited-edition version of Fiat’s iconic 1100 model, produced in the immediate post-war period. The Fiat 1100’s journey began in 1937 with the release of the Fiat 508C “Nuova Balilla 1100,” which evolved stylistically and was affectionately called the “musone” due to its distinctive, imposing windscreen. This car marked the first to bear the Fiat 1100 name, and it quickly gained popularity for its robust engineering, spacious interior, and efficient performance. By 1949, the Fiat 1100 had undergone further refinement, resulting in the 1100 E model, which featured a compartment at the rear for the spare wheel. With its 1089cc engine capable of producing 32 horsepower, the 1100 E was a reliable and versatile car that could reach a top speed of 110 km/h, while maintaining reasonable fuel consumption. This combination of power, practicality, and affordability made the 1100 an immensely popular model for the Italian market. In the years following, Fiat’s Lingotto Special Bodywork department, responsible for custom coachbuilding, produced a select few cabriolet versions based on the Fiat 1100 B. These special versions were a nod to the growing trend for more elegant and stylish cars, offering a convertible option that allowed for open-air motoring while retaining the 1100’s reliable mechanicals. While these cabriolets were limited in number, they hold a significant place in Fiat’s history as a precursor to the 1100-103, which debuted in 1953 and further solidified the 1100 as a beloved “average car” for Italian motorists. Today, the Fiat 1100 Cabriolet by Carrozzerie Speciali remains a charming representation of mid-century Italian automotive design, admired for its timeless elegance and historical importance as part of the Fiat 1100 legacy.
