01 / THE STORY

History & context

The Ferrari 400i Spider Pavesi represents a rare and distinctive adaptation within the lineage of Ferrari’s grand touring automobiles. Originating from the standard Ferrari 400i—a 2+2 coupé introduced in 1979 and produced until 1985—the Spider variant was not an official offering from Ferrari but rather a specialized conversion executed by Carrozzeria Pavesi, a Milanese coachbuilder known for bespoke automotive modifications. The base 400i was equipped with a 4.8-liter V12 engine, delivering power through either a five-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission sourced from General Motors. Its design, penned by Pininfarina, featured a three-box silhouette with pop-up headlights and a spacious interior, aligning with the grand touring ethos of comfort and performance. Despite its capabilities, Ferrari did not produce a convertible version of the 400i, leaving a niche that Pavesi sought to fill. Pavesi’s conversion process entailed significant structural modifications to compensate for the removal of the fixed roof. Reinforcements were added to maintain chassis rigidity, and an electrically operated soft top was installed—a notable feature during the early 1980s. The interior received enhancements with high-quality materials, and certain elements, such as the central tunnel, were redesigned to accommodate the new configuration. Production numbers for the 400i Spider Pavesi are limited, with estimates suggesting that approximately 18 units were converted. Of these, it is reported that 12 were delivered directly from Ferrari’s Maranello facility, implying a degree of endorsement or collaboration, although the conversions remained unofficial. The rarity of these vehicles, combined with the quality of Pavesi’s craftsmanship, has contributed to their desirability among collectors. The 400i Spider Pavesi stands as a testament to the era’s coachbuilding practices, where independent firms would tailor existing models to meet specific customer desires. It embodies a fusion of Ferrari’s engineering excellence with Pavesi’s bespoke design approach, resulting in a vehicle that offers both the performance expected of the marque and the exclusivity afforded by limited production.
